The Book

Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endures for ever. (Psalms 119:160)

All the amazing things which God has done on the earth have been recorded in a unique book, the Holy Bible. Really, this one big book is made up of many smaller books. Though all of these books were written down over thousands of years by different writers, it was God Himself who actually shaped their content, having them say exactly what He wanted them to say. So we find that, not surprisingly, the Bible is fully trustworthy, accurately telling us what has happened in history.

Originally, these many books were written in the ancient languages of Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. But now all these books, together as one large book, are translated into almost every language on earth!

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. (Psalms 119:105)

Yet God gave His Book to mankind not only to tell the story of what He has done, but also to show people how He wants them to live. The Bible tells us what is right and what is wrong. It teaches us how to think wisely, which is wisdom. And it teaches us how to act rightly, which is righteousness. Now when we think wisely and act rightly, this pleases God. And although He never promises that our lives will be free of pain, He does promise us rich blessing and protection if we follow His ways.

Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15)

So, in order to know what God has said and done, as well as what He thinks, we must be diligent to read His Book. But reading the Bible is not easy. To understand it clearly, it helps to know something about the time, the culture, and even the original languages in which it was written. That is why there are many study books available that make this easier for us, such as Bible dictionaries, Bible histories and atlases. We need to learn to read the Bible with great care. But the good news is, the more we read it, the more we begin to understand it. Yes, the more we will understand this great story of what God is doing—a story in which we too have a part!
